My name is Allen Shamsi /ˈæ.lən ʃæm.ˈsi/, and I’m a Ph.D. candidate in Linguistics. My research lies at the intersection of articulatory phoneticsspeech production and perceptionL2 speech motor learning, and Slavic linguistics. I work collaboratively with researchers across multiple labs, contributing to projects that examine how speech is planned, executed, and learned.

My dissertation explores how perceptual training impacts the acquisition of non-native speech motor sequences, focusing on English speakers’ production of illicit onset clusters. Using Electromagnetic Articulography in a multi-sessional experimental design, I compare groups receiving both perceptual and production training to those with production training only. The aim is to determine whether perceptual improvements facilitate articulatory coordination and generalize to novel sequences, informing models like SLM-r and PAM-L2.

My co-authored work has appeared in journals such as Applied PsycholinguisticsJournal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, and Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, and has been presented at conferences including the Boston Speech Motor Control Symposium and the Acoustical Society of America.
