Gillian Lord

Gillian Lord I received my B.S. in Spanish and English from Vanderbilt University (1993), muy M.A. in Hispanic Literatures from the University of Virginia (1997), and my Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University (2001). I am currently Professor of Spanish and Linguistics, and have been Chair of the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department since 2010. My work falls within the field of applied linguistics, and more specifically in the area of instructed language acquisition: learning that takes place in the classroom or other formal settings. My research focuses on language learning and teaching, including study abroad and technology-enhanced settings, and most often with a focus on the acquisition of the sound system of Spanish by English-speaking Learners. My most recent large-scale project is an all-digital beginning Spanish text (Contraseña, LingroLearning, 2018), which I coauthored with Dr. Amy Rossomondo (University of Kansas). I have previously served as the Spanish Section Head for the American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators (2012-2016), and on various College Board test-development committees, and I recently completed terms as co-president of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (2019-2020) and as President of the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (2017-2020).

Fun Fact: I am the Associate Chief Marshal for Floor Operations at all UF Commencement ceremonies
